Consultant, not package
What an SEO consultant does that an agency package does not
An agency package sells hours and deliverables. A consultant sells a decision: what to do first for your business in your towns, and who answers when it does not work. At BKND the consultant also builds, because we write the website code ourselves.

The first 60 minutes
What you leave the first hour with
Nothing to prepare. We pull up your website and your Google listing during the hour. You leave with a plain read on where you stand and what we would do first; if it makes sense, a written plan with the towns, the pages and the price follows.
- 0 to 15 min
Your business, in your words
How you get customers today, who the best ones are, the towns you serve, and what next year should look like.
- 15 to 25 min
How people find a business like yours
What Google shows for the searches your customers type: the map pack, the organic results and the AI answer at the top. Who owns those spots today and why.
- 25 to 45 min
A plan shaped to you
Which searches are winnable, which pages and listing changes would win them, and how that turns into calls and forms you can count.
- 45 to 60 min
Your questions, then next steps
Anything you want to ask. We agree what happens next, even if that is nothing for now.
Local SEO consultant
Local SEO consulting for New Jersey towns
“SEO consultant near me” is a map-pack search. So is almost every search your customers make. Google explains what decides those results, and a local consultant works that list town by town.
- Relevance, distance and prominence are the three things Google says decide local results. A consultant works on the two you control: relevance and prominence.
- The Business Profile is verified, complete and kept current: full address, hours, the right primary category, services and photos. Google says complete, accurate profiles are more likely to show.
- One page per town you actually serve, written for that town, linked from the profile and the site. Not one page with forty town names on it.
- Name, address and phone written the same way everywhere Google reads them.
- The map pack is checked from inside each town, not from your office, because distance changes the result.
BKND is in Elizabeth and works with businesses across Union, Essex, Middlesex, Bergen, Morris, Hudson, Somerset and Passaic counties. The town list and what our NJ SEO company does as a whole are on that page.

Hire SEO consultant: the checks
How to check any SEO consultant before you pay
Most of this list is Google’s own hiring advice, read on October 28, 2026. Ask us the same questions.
- 01
Ask for examples of previous work and the results, then check them yourself: search the term from the town and see who is there today.
- 02
Ask who does the work. If the person on the sales call is not the person who will write and build, ask to meet that person.
- 03
Ask what results they expect and in what timeframe, and how they measure success. Google says if an SEO guarantees first place in search results, find someone else.
- 04
Grant read-only access to Search Console for the audit, nothing more, until you decide to work together. Google’s hiring guidance says the same.
- 05
Ask whether they follow the Google Search Essentials and whether they will show you every change they make to your site and why.
- 06
Ask what you own if you leave: the site code, the pages, the accounts and the listing. Get it in writing.
- 07
Ask how long the contract runs. Month to month means the work has to keep earning its place.
FAQ
SEO consultant questions, answered
- How much does an SEO consultant cost?
- Across 439 SEO providers polled by Ahrefs (updated August 15, 2024), consultants charge $3,250 a month on average, the average hourly rate is $111, and $100 to $150 an hour is the most common hourly rate. Local SEO averages $1,557 a month. SEO.com's guide (updated October 27, 2026) puts most consultants at $50 to $200 an hour or $1,500 to $3,000 and up a month. BKND's own price is on our pricing page: Local SEO starts at $2,800 a month, month-to-month. After the first hour you get a written plan that says which towns and pages that covers for you.
- What is the difference between an SEO consultant and an SEO agency?
- A consultant is one named person who reads your numbers, decides what to do first and answers for the result. An agency package is a bundle of monthly tasks spread across an account manager, a strategist, a writer and a developer. At BKND the person who plans the work also builds the pages, because we write the website code ourselves. You keep one point of contact and you own the site, the Search Console and the Business Profile throughout.
- Can I do SEO myself instead of hiring a consultant?
- Google says so: if you run a small local business, you can probably do much of the work yourself, starting with its SEO Starter Guide. The part most owners run out of time for is the building: service pages for each town, the Business Profile kept complete, and the monthly check of what moved. A consultant is worth paying when you want someone to own that work and show you calls and forms by source.
- Is SEO dead now that AI answers show up first?
- No. On the search 'seo consultant' in New Jersey on October 28, 2026, Google showed an AI answer at the top, then a map pack of three local firms, then the organic results. The AI answer quoted pages that explain clearly what a consultant does and when to hire one. That is the same work: clear pages, a complete profile, and proof. A consultant now has to earn all three spots, not one.
- How long before SEO consulting shows results?
- It depends on your site's history and the towns you want. On this site, 50 of 169 new service pages reached page one within 56 days, with a median of 7 days to a first ranking (BKND's own records, read October 28, 2026). A page on a brand-new domain in a crowded town takes longer. In the first hour we tell you which searches look winnable in weeks and which will take months, before you pay for anything.
- What does 'SEO consultant near me' get me in New Jersey?
- Someone who knows the towns. BKND is at 30 Union St, Unit 13, Elizabeth, NJ 07202, and works with businesses across Union, Essex, Middlesex, Bergen, Morris, Hudson, Somerset and Passaic counties. The in-person option is a coffee chat in New Jersey; the online option is a video call. Both are 60 minutes and are booked on the consultation page.
- What do I own when the engagement ends?
- Everything. The website code, the pages, the Search Console and Analytics properties, the Google Business Profile and the written plan stay in your name from day one. Engagements run month to month and you can leave at the end of any month. Google's own hiring advice says to grant an SEO read-only Search Console access until you decide to work together; we ask for exactly that.
