A canonical URL is an HTML tag that tells search engines which version of a page is the "official" one when multiple URLs display the same or very similar content. It prevents duplicate content from diluting your SEO rankings and consolidates ranking signals to a single preferred URL.

Understanding Canonical URL

Duplicate content is surprisingly common on websites — e-commerce product pages with multiple URL variants (with filters, sorting, or session parameters), articles syndicated across multiple domains, and HTTP vs. HTTPS versions of the same page all create duplication. Search engines faced with identical content on multiple URLs have to guess which version to rank, often splitting the ranking signal between them.

The canonical tag (<link rel="canonical" href="[preferred URL]" />) solves this by explicitly declaring one URL as the authoritative version. Search engines then consolidate all signals — backlinks, engagement data, and crawl authority — to that single URL rather than fragmenting them across duplicates.

Canonical tags are also used legitimately when syndicating content. If you republish a blog post on Medium or LinkedIn, adding a canonical pointing back to your original URL tells Google your site is the source of truth, not the syndication platform.
