Pick your plan

Five plans. Pick one.

For most small businesses the answer is Plus ($20/mo) or Business ($30/user/mo). The other tiers are situational.

Free

$0

Includes: Basic GPT-4o access, web search, image generation (limited), voice mode (limited)

Recommendation: OK for personal exploration. Don't run client work on it (no data privacy guarantees).

Plus

$20/month

Includes: Full GPT-4o + GPT-5 access, advanced voice, image gen, file uploads, GPTs, custom GPTs

Recommendation: Right tier for most solo small business owners. The $20 sweet spot.

Business

$30/user/month

Includes: Plus features + shared workspaces, admin controls, longer context, no-training default

Recommendation: If you have a team using it. The $10 premium over Plus is worth it for the data isolation alone.

Enterprise

Custom (~$60-$200/user/month)

Includes: Business features + SSO, audit logs, custom data retention, BAA available, dedicated support

Recommendation: Only if you have 50+ users or regulated-industry compliance requirements.

Pro

$200/month

Includes: Unlimited GPT-5 Pro, deep research mode, advanced voice unlimited, priority access

Recommendation: Power users running 4+ hours/day of AI usage. Most SMB owners don't need this.

Five things ChatGPT excels at.

Where ChatGPT delivers high ROI for small business owners.

Drafting emails, proposals, and content

ChatGPT excels at first-pass writing. Sales follow-ups, client emails, blog posts, social copy, internal memos. Most owners find this is the highest-frequency use case — pays back the $20/mo subscription in the first hour of the first day.

Image generation for marketing

DALL·E 3 (built into ChatGPT) generates marketing images, blog post hero images, social media visuals, product mockups. Quality is consistent enough for SMB marketing use without hiring a designer for every asset. Claude has no equivalent.

Voice-driven brainstorming and dictation

ChatGPT's voice mode is real-time conversational. Useful for thinking out loud while driving, dictating notes, or brainstorming ideas hands-free. The voice quality is the best in production AI as of 2026.

Custom GPTs for repeatable tasks

Build a custom GPT once for your specific workflow (e.g., 'turn meeting notes into action items in our format'), share it with your team, and reuse it forever. The lowest-effort way to operationalize AI in a small team.

Web search + research synthesis

ChatGPT's web search returns current information with citations — useful for competitive research, market analysis, and quick fact-checking. Faster than Google for synthesis questions ('compare these 3 vendors').

Four things to skip ChatGPT for.

Claude or specialized tools are meaningfully better for these workloads.

Long-document analysis

ChatGPT chunks past 100K tokens and loses fidelity on documents larger than ~150 pages. Claude reads 200K tokens in one pass and is meaningfully better for legal docs, financial reports, M&A material. We use Claude for this at BKND every day.

Multi-file coding work

ChatGPT's Code Interpreter is a sandboxed single-file environment. For real codebase work — refactoring across files, writing features that touch multiple components — Claude Code is the right tool. ChatGPT excels at quick scripts; Claude Code excels at production engineering.

Client-confidential analysis on the free tier

Don't paste client contracts, financial statements, or PII into the free tier of ChatGPT. The data privacy guarantees only apply to paid tiers (Plus, Business, Enterprise) and the API. Use the right tier for the work.

Long-context business workflows

If your prompt needs to include positioning, brand voice, prior content, customer data, and current task context — Claude Projects holds it all in 200K. ChatGPT's Custom GPTs hit a smaller wall.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best ChatGPT plan for a small business owner?+

ChatGPT Plus at $20/month for solo owners. ChatGPT Business at $30/user/month if you have a team. Skip Free for client work (no privacy guarantees) and skip Pro at $200/mo unless you're using AI 4+ hours/day. The $20-$30 tier is the right answer for 95% of small businesses in 2026.

Do I need both ChatGPT and Claude?+

If you're using AI seriously for business — yes, almost certainly. Pay $20/mo for ChatGPT Plus and $20/mo for Claude Pro. Total $40/mo. Use ChatGPT for image generation, voice, distribution-ready content, and creative work. Use Claude for long-context analysis, coding, document review, and structured business workflows. Most teams that pick only one are leaving capability on the table.

Is ChatGPT safe for client business data?+

On the paid tiers (Plus, Business, Enterprise) and via the API — yes. OpenAI guarantees no training on your data on these tiers. Business and Enterprise add data isolation, longer retention controls, and audit logs. The Free tier has weaker guarantees and is inappropriate for client-confidential work. Always run client work on paid tiers.

What's the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Business?+

Plus ($20/user/mo) is for individuals. Business ($30/user/mo) adds: shared workspaces (your team sees the same custom GPTs), admin console, no-training-default at organizational level, longer context windows, and SSO support. The $10/user premium is worth it for any team using ChatGPT for business work — the admin controls and shared workspaces alone justify it.

What is a Custom GPT and why should I use one?+

A Custom GPT is a saved version of ChatGPT pre-loaded with your specific instructions, knowledge documents, and behavior tuning. Build once, use forever. Examples: 'Turn meeting notes into action items in our format,' 'Generate weekly status email in our voice,' 'Qualify inbound leads against our ICP.' We've built dozens for clients. Highest leverage when 5+ team members reuse the same workflow.

Can I use ChatGPT for customer-facing tasks?+

Carefully. ChatGPT can power customer service drafts (human reviews and sends), generate FAQ responses, and answer general questions. But for direct customer-facing AI in your business, you typically want a custom-built integration via the OpenAI API — not the consumer ChatGPT product. The custom build ensures you control branding, conversation flow, and data routing. We build these for clients at $5K-$15K/system.

How does ChatGPT compare to Microsoft Copilot or Google Gemini?+

All three are competitive. Microsoft Copilot is best if you live in Office 365 — tight integration with Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams. Google Gemini is best if you live in Google Workspace — Gmail, Docs, Sheets integration. ChatGPT is best as a general-purpose tool that doesn't lock you into a productivity suite. For a small business already on Office 365, Copilot at $30/user/mo is a reasonable substitute for ChatGPT Business.

Will my customers know I'm using ChatGPT?+

Probably not — and you don't usually need to disclose internal use of AI for drafting. Where disclosure matters: (1) AI directly speaking to customers (voice agents, chatbots) — disclose. (2) AI making material decisions about customer matters (legal, medical, financial advice) — disclose. (3) Otherwise, using ChatGPT as a writing assistant is comparable to using Grammarly or templates — no disclosure obligation.

What can ChatGPT not do well that I should be aware of?+

Three weaknesses. (1) Long-document analysis past 100K tokens — Claude is better. (2) Multi-file coding — Claude Code is purpose-built for this. (3) Highly current information without web search — its knowledge has a cutoff date. For these workloads, use Claude or Google Gemini's deep research mode instead.

How do I get started?+

Three steps. (1) Sign up for ChatGPT Plus at chatgpt.com/pricing — $20/month. (2) Pick three repeatable tasks you do weekly (drafting emails, generating reports, brainstorming ideas) and use ChatGPT for the next two weeks on those tasks specifically. (3) After two weeks, decide whether to upgrade to Business (if your team is using it) or add Claude Pro (if you're hitting context limits or doing technical work). Most owners are productive within 90 minutes of first signup.
