AI Consultant — Strategy, Roadmaps, Fractional

An AI consultant who's actually built it.

No 200-page strategy decks. No 12-week engagements. We map the highest-ROI AI workflows in your business and tell you exactly what to build, in what order, with what budget. Two hours. Written roadmap in 48.

What you get

An actionable roadmap, not a strategy deck.

Every consulting engagement ends with one deliverable: a written roadmap your team can act on this week.

Two-hour AI Readiness Session

On-site (NJ) or remote. We shadow your operation, map every manual workflow, score each by time spent + revenue impact + automation feasibility. No pitch deck. No PowerPoint. Just questions and answers.

Written Roadmap (48 hours)

PDF delivered within 48 hours of the session. Top 5 AI opportunities ranked by ROI, with implementation cost estimates, model recommendations (Claude/GPT/open-source), and a 90-day execution path.

Prioritized Punch List

Each opportunity has: estimated implementation cost, expected payback period, model dependencies, security considerations, and what your team needs to prepare. You can hand this to any vendor — including us — and they'll know exactly what to build.

Direct line to founders

Charwin runs the session and writes the roadmap. Not a junior associate. You're talking to the person who built MIT — the AI system that runs our 25-client agency. The strategic depth is the product.

Three engagement tiers

Most relationships start with the Assessment. Some clients jump straight to a Working Day. A few embed us as fractional.

Why us

We're not consultants who picked up AI. We're builders who happen to consult.

Most AI consultants used to be management consultants who rebranded. They can talk strategy. They can't build. When their roadmap hits implementation, they hand you off to vendors and bill you for project management.

We built MIT — the AI system that runs our 25-client SEO agency every day. It's 5,000+ pages of code, integrations across 6 data sources, and a control layer that lets three humans do what would normally take a fifteen-person team. That's not a case study. That's our actual operations.

When we tell you what to build, we've built it. When we tell you what to skip, we've tried it. The consulting fee buys you the shortcuts.

Who we work with

Six categories where we've installed AI.

Professional Services

Law firms, accountants, consultants, agencies. Long sales cycles, high-value leads, document-heavy work. AI absorbs intake, drafting, research synthesis.

Home Services & Trades

Roofing, HVAC, plumbing, paving, cleaning, auto repair. 24/7 phone intake, instant quoting, dispatch automation, review velocity. We know this category cold — half our book is here.

Healthcare Admin

Private practices, clinics, med-spas. Intake forms, appointment reminders, insurance verification, HIPAA-aware workflows. Free up front-desk staff without sacrificing compliance.

Ecommerce & DTC

$500K–$20M Shopify and BigCommerce brands. Customer support, product content, retention email, review-response automation.

Real Estate

Brokerages, property managers, investors. Lead routing, showing scheduling, document prep, listing syndication, tenant screening.

Operating-Led SMB

Any $1M–$20M revenue business where the founder is the bottleneck. We map what AI can take off your plate without you losing control of the work.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI consultant actually do?+

An AI consultant maps where AI fits in your business and tells you what to build, in what order, with what budget. The good ones (us included) only recommend AI when it's the right tool — not because they're trying to sell you AI. Our deliverable is a written roadmap with specific workflows ranked by ROI, model recommendations, implementation costs, and a 90-day execution path. You can hand the roadmap to any vendor; we tell you whether we should be the one building it.

How is BKND different from a McKinsey or Deloitte AI consultant?+

Big-firm consultants will run a 12-week engagement, deliver a 200-page strategy deck, and charge $250K–$500K. We deliver a 10-page actionable roadmap from a 2-hour session for $1,500. The difference: we're practitioners. We've built and deployed AI systems for 25 small businesses. We don't theorize about transformation — we tell you the three things to do this week and the seven things to skip.

How much does an AI consultant cost?+

Rates vary wildly. Independent practitioners (us): $300–$500/hour or fixed-fee engagements ($1,500 for assessment, $5,000 for full-day implementation, $5K–$15K/mo for fractional). Boutique consultancies: $10K–$50K per engagement. Big-firm consultancies: $200K+. The right price depends on your business size and whether you want strategy or implementation. Most small businesses are over-served by big firms and under-served by independents — we sit in the middle.

Do I need an AI consultant if I already use ChatGPT?+

Probably not for personal productivity. But if you want AI doing work in your business — answering customer calls, qualifying leads, drafting documents, generating content at scale, running reports — you need someone who can architect that. Most owners can use ChatGPT well; very few can design a multi-step agentic workflow that runs reliably for 1,000+ transactions/month. That's where we come in.

What's the deliverable from your AI consulting?+

From the 2-hour AI Readiness Assessment: a written PDF roadmap (48-hour delivery) covering top 5 AI opportunities ranked by ROI, implementation cost estimates, model recommendations (Claude/GPT/open-source), security considerations, and 90-day execution path. From the AI Working Day: 2–3 working AI systems built live + training + implementation roadmap. From fractional consulting: weekly working sessions, written quarterly business reviews, ongoing roadmap evolution.

What models and tools do you recommend?+

It depends. We use Claude for long-context reasoning + agentic coding workflows. ChatGPT for image generation, voice interfaces, and high-volume API at lowest cost. Open-source models (Llama, Mistral) when self-hosting matters for compliance. For integrations: Node, Python, Next.js, n8n, Zapier when it fits, custom code when it doesn't. We're vendor-agnostic. We pick what fits your use case, not what we have an affiliate deal on.

How is this different from a no-code AI tool like Zapier or Make?+

No-code tools are great for simple 2–3 step automations. We use them when they fit. But when the workflow gets real — AI reasoning, branching logic, your own data, security requirements — we build in code so the system is fast, reliable, and yours to keep forever. No seat limits. No workflow caps. No vendor lock-in. The role of an AI consultant is to tell you which tier each workflow belongs in.

Do you only work with NJ businesses?+

We're based in Elizabeth, NJ and run on-site sessions across the state — Newark, Jersey City, Edison, Princeton, the broader NYC metro. Beyond the region we work remote with clients across the U.S. The consulting deliverables are software-and-strategy — they don't care about geography. The on-site sessions are the only thing that requires NJ proximity.

Can you work with my IT team?+

Yes — we're often the bridge between leadership and IT. We'll work directly with your team on integration, security architecture, model selection, and deployment. If your IT team has strong opinions about which models to use or where to host them, great — we'll adapt. If they don't have AI experience yet, we'll bring them up to speed.

How do I know if I need an AI consultant vs just hiring someone?+

Hire if: you're committed to building AI as a core capability, the work will keep someone full-time busy for 12+ months, and you can find someone with the right experience (rare and expensive — $250K+ for senior AI engineers in 2026). Consult if: you want to identify the right opportunities first, you need an outside perspective, or you'd rather buy outcomes than manage another full-time hire. Most $1M–$20M businesses are better off consulting first and hiring after they have the roadmap.

Stop guessing. Start with the roadmap.

Two hours. Written roadmap. $1,500.

The cheapest way to know whether AI is worth investing in for your business is to spend two hours with someone who's built it. That's the AI Readiness Assessment.
